Got oily Skin? Here’s how to deal with it!

For a staggering majority of people, overly oily skin is a nuisance.   However, you shouldn’t beat yourself up about it; chances are it’s just something that’s being caused by puberty, the environment, your diet or hormonal / hereditary factors.   Here are some things to consider if you’re looking to clear up your oily skin…

Don’t use too many products

For starters, one of the worst things a person can do is enact too many solutions at once.  In fact, doing so will often dry your skin out even more which will lead to a host of other problems including additional breakouts, etc…  Instead, you need to identify which specific items work best for your skin type and slowly refine your cleansing routine over time.  In many cases, a simple facial cleanser and hot water will do the trick, however each person is different so it might be best to find someone with a similar skin type and ask them what they use.  Moreover, try to avoid products which contain a large number of ingredients, especially those which are known to be harsh or abrasive.

Try to attain a natural PH balance

The pores and oil-producing centers in the skin are activated by increasing dryness, so it makes little sense to keep drying your skin out.  For example, it’s been shown that those who shampoo their hair every single day tend to produce more oil from the scalp (because the body is trying to correct its PH balance and retain moisture through the production of additional oil).  In order to reach a more balanced state it is recommended that you seek out cleansers which are non-abrasive and as “natural” as possible.  Similarly, instead of vigorously drying off your skin after a wash, let it air dry; this allows some of the moisture to soak into the pores which can prevent excessive dryness and therefore quell overactive oil production.  Additionally, always remember to avoid excessive force and scrubbing as this can damage skin and cause redness.  Similarly, remember to keep a regular routine.

Try adopting a more extensive routine

If the low-maintenance approach doesn’t work for you, then you might want to try the 3-step approach:

  1. Cleanse

  2. Tone

  3. Moisturize

In essence, you simply pick a cleanser that’s right for your skin type, follow that with a salicylic acid-based toner (applied with cotton balls), and finish up with an oil-free moisturizer.  It’s vitally important that you don’t overdo the moisturizer though, what you’re looking for is a gentle blend that doesn’t look slick or wet.  Simply apply little dots around your eyes, cheeks, etc…and very gently rub it in (with clean fingers or perhaps a Q-tip / cotton swab).

If you wear makeup, make sure it’s oil-free as well

What good is a perfect facial cleansing routine if you immediately follow it up with copious amounts of makeup containing oil?  In short, using makeup with oil will not only add to your skin troubles, it might actually be the root cause of your oily skin and blemishes.  Make sure you check the labels before purchase.

Use blotting sheets

Simply put, blotting sheets are little thin sheets of oil-absorbing paper which you can use to quickly remove oil from your face nearly anywhere.  Not only are they extremely handy, but they’re an inexpensive solution which can be used in tandem with makeup, which makes them very useful, if not vital.
